女主人から聞いた倉庫・・・・（倉庫と言うより古い民家だった）・・・・は東北沢の住宅街にあった。記憶は定かじゃないけど茶沢通りから東北沢の踏み切りを駒場東大前方面に渡ったあたり。今ではマンション群が立ち並びその場所は確認できない。平屋で庭がある古い家。しかも縁側があった。ガラガラと玄関を開けて中に入ると、二間続きの畳の部屋にギッシリとデニムが山積みされていた！！すべてusedである。僕が見る限り日本製のものは１本も無かった。これまで聞いたことも見た事も無いジャンクなブランドからLIVEI'Sを始めLEEやWRANGLERまでもあった。ただほとんどが小さめのサイズで丈の短いものばかりだった。そして縫子の女性がミシンにむかってもくもくとそのジーンズに手を加えさらにサイズ・ダウンを施していた。「め組」は女性専門店だからそれようにリサイズしていたのだろう。僕はその山のようなused jeansの中を物色。２本のジーンズをキープしてもらった。１本は無名のジャンクなジーンズ。生地が荒くてゴワゴワしている割に柔らかい。そしてもう１本は今思えばLEEの１０１B-COWBOY、大戦モデルってやつだ。最初手に取ったとき、僕はこれがコーラ屋の友人Ｍが語っていたLIVEI'Sだと思った。しかし、この頃まだまだデニムに関して無知だった僕はそのジーンズを手に取ってLEEの表記を確認、ちょっとがっかりしたのを覚えている。そして、しかしながら、LEEにもLIVEI'Sみたいなフロント・ホック・ボタン・フライがあるんだ、LIVEI'Sの真似だなぁ、って妙な納得をした。そして錆びたドーナツ・ボタンを見てLIVEI'Sより安物だな、なんて間抜けなことを考えたりしていた。ましてバック・ポケットのステッチもV字でLIVEI'Sに似ていたから尚更であった。僕がLIVEI'S 501を手に入れたのはそれから１ヶ月後。原宿の露店でだった。だからまだ見ぬLIVEI'Sに思いを馳せ、そのジーンズがLEEであっても相当嬉しかった。色の落ち具合はLEE独特の灰色がかった感じ。僕が初めて見る、そして初めて手に入れたボタン・フライのジーンズである。今となっては幻のようなジーンズである。この２本のジーンズは残念な事にもう僕の手元には無い。８１年にフリー・マーケットで二束三文で売ってしまった。東北沢の倉庫はそれっきり行かなかった。理由は僕にサイズが合うLIVEI'Sを発見できなかったからだ。しかしその有象無象積まれたジーンズの山の中には今では信じられないようなお宝ジーンズがきっと眠っていたはずだ。今思うと残念でならないけど当時は「ジーンズ事始め」みたいな時代である。ただただ僕は自分に合うサイズと気に入った色合いのものを探していただけだ。それから何年か経ってヴィンテージ・ジーンズが高騰した時、ちょっとシラケてしまったのを覚えている。しかし今もって不思議なのはあの倉庫のジーンズ群はどこからやって来たのだろう？「め組」の女主人はどこであれだけのジーンズを手に入れていたのだろう。謎である。すべては３０年以上も昔の事だ。「め組」の女主人がご存命であってもかなりの高齢のはず。あの東北沢の民家のジーンズ倉庫、今思うとあの空間すら幻であったような気がする。(写真は下北沢食品市場、「め組」があったあたり）
