下北沢「め組」の謎...②

「め組」に並べられたLEVI'S 501 XX。そのサイズのほとんどが女性向けにアレンジされていた。なかなか手の込んだ作りで２６〜２８インチくらいにサイズ・ダウンされていた。ただ、いただけなかったのはフロント・ホックをYKKのファスナーに付け替えてあった事だ。そこだけ真新しい。値段は１９００円。その頃の日本では、まだそのジーンズの品番が５０１だなんて事を誰も知らない時代だったし気にも留めなかった。僕ですらそんな事にこだわりも無かった。ただリーバイスの色落ちが俄然好きだったし、以前このブログでも紹介したコーラ屋のＳがリーバイスこそアメリカのジーンズだとウンチクたれていた事が頭のどこかに残っていた、だからリーバイスの古着の山に、しかも下北沢で出くわした事はなかなかの驚きだった。「め組」の女店主はかなり高齢だった。たぶん７０才前後。で、僕は彼女に「このリーバイスの男物サイズは無いですか？」と訊いてみた。女店主は「？」という顔をした。「ジーパンのこと？」彼女はリーバイスという名前すら知らなかった。彼女にとってはただの「ジーパン」にしか過ぎなかった。「男物のジーパンは倉庫に行けばあるよ。」「倉庫？があるんですか？」「あるよ、東北沢に家の倉庫が」、僕と会話しながら女店主はゴソゴソと奥からなにやら引っ張り出して来た。「あんた、これ着ない？デニムの上着なんだけどさ。」女店主が僕の目の前に出した一着の上着。初めて見るデニムのワーキング・ジャケット（カーペンター・ジャケット）だった。タグには”RED BAR”という表記が。こんなメーカーは聞いた事が無い。それよりなにより僕は生まれて初めて見るこのワーキング・ジャケットに痛く感動してしまった。ポケットの大きさも機能的だしその色落ち具合、オンスの軽めのコットン、何ともいえない風合いを感じた。今考えるとこのジャケットはたぶん５０年代とかその辺りのものだと思う。女店主は試着した僕に「３０００円でいいよ」と言った。もちろん即決である。ただ３０００円の手持ちが無かったので取り置きしてもらった。そして僕はもう一度彼女が口にした倉庫について訊ねた。「あんたが見たいなら倉庫を見せてあげるよ。今地図を描いてやるから。電話しとくから見に行って来な」・・・→次回につづく
