霞町物語

出張に行く際必ず手軽で読みやすい文庫本を駅の書店で買う。最近読んで印象に残ったものが浅田次郎の「霞町物語」青山と麻布と六本木の台地に挟まれた谷間、現在西麻布の交差点と言われているあたり。この交差点がいつ西麻布交差点という名に変わったのかはっきり記憶が無い。僕が学生の頃は霞町の交差点と呼んでいた。この霞町と言うロマンチックな街の名前はもう東京の地図の中からは消失している。夜ともなれば大使館、青山墓地の木立から蒸気のようにしっとりとした霧が沸く。この街をすっぽり霧が包み潤んだ街の光景が薄暗い街灯に浮かび上がる。そんな夜中の静寂を時としてトヨタ２０００GTやMG、そしてチュ－ンアップしたスカイラインなんてスポーツ・カーのエンジン音が突き破る。路上駐車して彼等が向かう先はこの地にひっそり佇むどこかのショット・バーのカウンターだったのだろう。当時まだ中学生になったばかりの僕はそんな不良達の光景を見て憧れていた。彼等の着ているVANジャケットやJUNのスラックス、そして後発のエドワーズのヨーロピアン・スタイルに胸焦がした。その時代、僕がファッションの参考にしていたのは当時唯一の服飾雑誌MEN'S CLUBであった。男性週刊誌として平凡パンチが創刊されてはいたけれどヌード・グラビアが多く子供にはなかなか購入しづらいものだった。そして音楽雑誌ミュージック・ライフの紙面で華麗に登場するブリティッシュ・ロック・スターの奇抜なファッションに溜め息をついていた。つまり眺めるだけで小遣い程度しか貰っていなかった僕は早く大人になりたい、せめてアルバイトが出来る年齢になりたいと日夜切望していた。この時代、深夜を駆け抜けた不良少年達は僕よりもうひとつ前の世代、いわゆる団塊の世代の人たちである。この時代の不良達に言える事は自分たちのアイテムを・・・それはファッションであれ車であれ・・・アイデアと行動力でオリジナリティー溢れるものにしていた。情報が無い時代、自分達の欲しいものは海外雑誌のグラビアをむさぼり眺めては作り出したり、はたまた仕立て屋に頼んだり、楽器屋やレコードにおいてもしかりである。フェンダーやギブソン、そしてマーチンは車が１台買えてしまえるほどの値段だった。そのためイタリア製のECHOなんて値段の多少安いギターを手に入れ代用していたり。輸入レコード専門店も無く手に入りにくいディスクはアメリカン・スクールの友人に調達してもらったり、休みの日にはそれらを求めて福生や横浜辺りまで探索に出かけたりしていたようだ。中学生の僕であれ休日はそんな場所に出向いていた。楽器屋のショー・ウィンドウに飾られているギブソンを眺めるだけで満足だったのだ。この浅田次郎の「霞町物語」には当時の若者の日常がみずみずしくそしてどこか哀しく描かれている。それは過ぎ去ったものへの郷愁からくる喪失感なのかも知れない。あの時代をちょっとでも知っている人がいたら何ともたまらない気持ちになって来る。少年だった僕は、この近くて遠い団塊世代の人たちの青春をいつもうらやましく眺めていた。
