今まで随分車には乗った。スプリンター〜ルーチェ〜レジェンド〜ゲレンデバーゲン・プレディカット〜ジャガーＷ６〜レンジローバー〜ゲレンデバーゲンＶ8。実はそんなに車に詳しくはない。最初のゲレンデは８０年代日本に初めて輸出された時だったから相当に珍しかった。で、１台だけエンスー地獄に陥りかけたのがこの車、バンデン・プラ・プリンセス。１９６９年製。全長３７６cm、全幅１５３cm、全高１３６cm、車両重量９３０kg 排気量１３００cc。内装はロールス・ロイスを手がけたコーチ・ビルダー。ウォール・ナット・パネルと後部座席にはピクニック・テーブル、そして上質な革シート。右ハンドル、オート・マチック。現在でもオート・マチック車両が少ないイギリスで当時これはとても贅沢な車であったと思われる。スモール・ロールス・ロイスと呼ばれていたくらいだ。僕はオルタネーターを容量の高いものに交換、大型ラジエターと電動ファンを追加して乗っていたもののエアコンを使用するとバッテリーが上がってしまったりエンジンが加熱したり。冬には５〜６分の暖気が必要でなかなか発車できなかったり。ハンドルは重く、小回りが利かない、そして雨の日の視界も悪く何とも苦労を共にした想い出がある。でも今でも僕はこの車にもう一度乗ってみたいと思っている。あれから１０数年経ったから今現存するプリンセスはもっと老朽化しているだろう。以前にも増して修理やチューン・アップにお金がかかってしまうだろう。でもこの英国のわがままな貴婦人とも言えるプリンセス、もう一度あのシートに座ってチョークを引っ張ってみたい。
