BEST OF THE BEATLES

先日、ピート・ベスト・バンドを観た。ビートルズ・ファンでピートを知らない人はまずいない。ピート・ベストは１９６０年８月～１９６２年８月の２年間、ビートルズのメンバーであった。正しくはクォーリーメン後期、シルヴァー・ビートルズの時代からザ・ビートルズと名前が変更される歴史の中、ジョン、ポール、ジョージ、そしてスチュアート・サトクリフと活動を共にしたドラマーである。（ジョニー＆ムーンドッグス、レインボウズ、と言う一時ビートルズが変名していた時期は参加していない。このふたつバンド名は一時的なものでシルヴァー・ビートルズ直前までビートルズはクォーリーメンを名乗っていたようだ。）ピート・ベストは悲劇の人である。ビートルズがレコード・デビュー契約を果たす直前、解雇になった話しは周知の事実である。ビートルズの空前絶後の成功を思えば彼の人生は一時生き地獄のような苦しみであった事が容易に想像出来る。その悲劇、つまりその解雇の真相はいまだ明らかにされてはいない。ビートルズのメンバー、関係者、ピート本人からそれぞれ異なった見解で語られてはいるがどことなく歯切れが悪い。ピート自身はきっと思い当たる節があるだろうが本人から未だ真実は語られていない。僕自身なんとなくこうではないかと思うところはあるがここでは割愛する。

だが、スチュアートの死、そしてピートの解雇～リンゴの加入はビートルズの物語をよりいっそうドラマチックに彩る事になった。

 

 

さて、今回、ピート・ベスト・バンド＠コットン・クラブ。

お世辞にもテクニックのあるバンドとは言えなかった。しかし僕は十分楽しめた。演奏技術面だけで言えば、たぶんハンブルグのビートルズもきっとこの程度のものだったのだろうと思う。

ただし、ジョン、ポール、ジョージの強力なキャラクターが演奏面を上回る大きな魅力だったのだろう。

その夜のピート・ベスト・バンドのレパートリーはピートが在籍した時にジョン、ポール、ジョージと一緒にプレイしたものと思われる曲ばかりだった。

 

まずベサメ・ムーチョは何とも微笑ましく、リード・ギターの拙さはブートレグで聴く事の出来るジョージのプレイにそっくりだった。

そしてマイ・ボニーとクライ・フォー・ア・シャドウ、まさしくこのプレイはトニー・シェリダン＆ビート・ブラザースのドラミングである。ピートのドラムの特徴は基本左手で２拍４拍を強調するスネアとエイトビートを刻み続けるハイハット、そしてバタバタとしたスネアのロール。リンゴと比較してみるとどうしても平べったく軽いのがわかる。リンゴはロウ・チューニングだから重く聴こえるのだがやはりタムのロールやアフター気味だがつんのめるビートが独特である。歴史にもしもは有り得ない事だが、ピートがドラマーとしてビートルズに残っていたらシー・ラヴス・ユーのイントロのフロア・タムは絶対違ったものになっていただろう。アイ・フィール・ファインもティケット・トゥ・ライドもヘルプもレインも、当然ストロベリー・フィールズやア・デイ・イン・ライフ、ヘイ・ジュード、カム・トゥゲザーも全く別物になっていたはずだ。そんな思いでピート・ベスト・バンドを僕は観ていた。後半、P.S アイ・ラヴ・ユーを演奏中、ピートがこの曲を口ずさみながらドラムを叩いているのを観た時、何とも言えない気持ちになった。ピートは今、どんな思いで当時を振り返っているのだろうか？すべてを水に流したのだろうか？友人達の裏切りを許したのだろうか？いずれにせよ、彼にとってのビートルズ時代はすでに５０年も昔の出来事である。アンソロジーがリリースされた時、ピートの勇姿が初めて公式にビートルズのアルバム・ジャケットに登場した。その歴史の中でピートもメンバーであった事をビートルズのメンバーが認めた訳である（ジョンは他界していたが）。

時間の経過は時に残酷だったりするが優しくもある。ピート・ベストの心が今は穏やかであって欲しいと願わずにはいられない。

 

LIVE終了後、ピート・ベスト・バンドのCD「HAYMANS GREEN」（タイトルはピートがジョン、ポール、ジョージに出逢った場所、彼の母親が経営していたカスバ・クラブのある場所）、

そして新譜、DOXYなるレーベルから公式に？リリースされた「THE DECCA TAPES」（嘗てブートレグでリリースされていた）にピートからサインをもらった。

その時、僕がアストリッドの写真展を開催した事、そしてハンブルグでアストリッドとギブソン・ケンプに会った話しをしたらピートが驚いたようににっこり笑った。

「Gibson Kemp! ?   incredible!」ピート・ベストの手はとても温かく大きかった。

 

 

P.S.   ピート・ベストの本名はRandolph Peter Best、

          ジョン・レノンの「in his own write」の「ランドルフのパーティー 」、実はこの主人公ランドルフはジョン自身であると共にピート・ベストの事を書いているのではないかと僕はずっと思っている。
